Sedation Dentistry & Its Benefits

Sedation dentistry has been gaining considerable traction in recent years, offering patients a more comfortable and relaxing experience during their dental appointments. This innovative approach is employed by dental professionals like Dr. Mun and his team, who provide sedation as an option for patients at every appointment, whether it is for a routine teeth cleaning or a more invasive procedure such as a filling.

Sedation has proven to be an effective method for alleviating dental anxiety and ensuring a positive dental experience. To learn more about sedation dentistry, we encourage you to consult with highly trained experts in the field—such as the team at our Pflugerville, TX office!

Sedation dentistry may be particularly beneficial if you:

  • Feel anxious or uncomfortable in the dentist’s chair: Many people experience anxiety or restlessness during dental treatments, which can make the entire experience more challenging. Sedation dentistry addresses these concerns by helping patients feel calm and relaxed, allowing them to remain still and cooperative throughout the procedure.
  • Suffer from a strong gag reflex: An overactive gag reflex can interfere with dental procedures and make them more difficult to perform. Sedation dentistry helps suppress the reflex, making it easier for dentists to carry out their work and for patients to tolerate the treatment.
  • Have had a previous negative dental experience: Past traumatic experiences at the dentist can lead to anxiety and reluctance to seek dental care in the future. Sedation dentistry can help alleviate these fears by providing a comfortable, stress-free experience that can help patients overcome their apprehensions and regain confidence in dental care.

Oral Sedation

Prescribed and taken orally, oral sedation can be taken an hour before treatment or upon arrival at our office, making for a truly personalized sedation dentistry option. Depending on the type and potency of the medication, our patients may feel anything from a moderate decrease in anxiety to feeling so relaxed they fall asleep in the chair! With this sedation dentistry option, it may be necessary for a friend or family member to provide transportation home.

IV Sedation

Administered intravenously, this type of dental anesthesia puts patients into a sleeplike state, though they will remain awake during their procedure. With amnesic effects, many patients who receive IV sedation may forget parts of their care or the entirety of their treatment. IV sedation is an ideal choice for patients with more severe anxiety and those needing more complex treatments. With some lasting effects, patients will need someone to drive them home after their visit.

Nitrous Oxide

One of the most popular sedation dentistry options among our patients is nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask prior to your treatment. Though you’ll remain alert throughout your procedure, you’ll be relaxed and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly once your mask is removed, leaving you able to drive yourself home.
